Our new church was designed by Joseph J. Schiffer Of Concord, Massachusetts, and built by the Hollet Building Corporation of Wakefield, Massachusetts. It is situated on a three acre site in order to allow adequate space for parking and for future expansion of the parish hall.
The parish hall will serve as a fellowship hall and educational facility. For Sunday school it will be divided into classrooms by means Of portable partitions.
In contrast to the parish hall, the church is not designed for expansion. Inside the church the massive granite altar, together with the pulpit and font comprise the focal point. The reredos or wood screen behind the chancel and the burgundy carpet in the chancel heighten this effect and indicate that the act of worship centers in the Word and Sacraments. The dominant position, accentuated by the pendent cross and the small louvered skylight, is given to the altar which stands as a symbol of God's gracious presence in His Church. The altar is engraved with a Chi Rho, a monogram of Christ made up of the first two Greek letters of His name, in order to mark it as the Lord's table for the celebration of Holy Communion and in order to signify that the sacrifice for sins was made once and for all by our Lord Jesus Christ.
The floor plan of the church gives visible expression to the corporate aspect of worship. By gathering the congregation closely around the liturgical center, the building states that the congregation is not an audience of individuals but a worshiping community. The worship is offered not only by the pastor and others "up front" but by the total congregation.
The central skylight sweeps man's thoughts from himself upward to the Lord who is his lights and salvation. As it directs the worshiping congregation to the Source of "every good gift and every perfect endowment," it issues the invitation: "Lift up your hearts unto the Lord."
The windows of French and German stained glass suggest the "beauty of holiness" and present the chief symbol of the Christian faith and of our redemption. The cross appears on furnishings as well as in its central position above the altar. The prominence of the cross throughout the church serves as a constant reminder Of the redemptive suffering and death of Jesus Christ and at the same time constitutes an acknowledgement that His Church is called to be a Servant Church. "If any would come after me, let him . . . take up his cross and follow me."
The dominant colors in the church are liturgical colors which carry a message. White is the traditional color for joy, perfection, and purity. Red is the color of fire, the Holy Spirit, fervor, martyrdom, love, and victorious faith. Violet is the color of contrition and repentance. The color of the paraments for the altar and pulpit changes with the Church Year so that both the color and the symbols of the paraments are appropriate to the season of the Year represented.
By means Oo architectural form, color, and symbols, we thus have attempted to articulate in a symbolic way great truths Of the Christian Faith and to create a setting conducive to worship.
In 1993, the church was expanded to include a new educational area, a new kitchen, a new narthex and a new parking lot. The following was the reasoning at the time:
"God will bless us with a million blessings for giving Him the best opportunity possible to teach His Word to His children of all ages through the new education/fellowship facility we dedicate this day! We have made a major spiritual difference in the lives of generations to come who pass through our open doors here at Messiah.
Our building now proclaims that Christian education is just as important as Christian worship, and God is celebrating with us for this vital addition to our great commission we share with our Lord Jesus Christ! Our new kitchen, the new narthex and the new parking lot are not just nice things to have, they too are essential elements of an overall ministry which seeks to win souls for everlasting life in Christ's Name! "
